Wuwei Tianti Mountain Grottoes Travel Guide

Liangzhou District
Perched 50 kilometers south of Wuwei, Tianti Mountain Grottoes is one of China's earliest and most revered cave complexes, serving as the precursor to iconic sites like Yungang Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes. This majestic mountain, with its rugged peaks and precipitous slopes, is affectionately known as "Heavenly Ladder Mountain" due to its winding stone staircase and treacherous terrain. At the mountain's snow-capped summit, the "Heavenly Ladder Snow" has been a cherished part of the region's eight scenic wonders for centuries. The grottoes themselves, also known as the "Great Buddha Temple" or "Daxiang Temple", date back to the 16th century and feature a colossal Buddha statue nestled within a temple at the base of the mountain.
