Chongming District
Perched on the eastern tip of Chongming Island, the Shanghai Chongming Dongtan National Bird Nature Reserve is a haven of tranquility, where the Yangtze River's siltation has given birth to a vast expanse of freshwater to brackish water swamps, tidal gullies and intertidal flats, creating a unique wetland ecosystem. Spanning an impressive 32,600 hectares, this reserve is a vital sanctuary for water birds, accounting for nearly 8% of Shanghai's total wetland area.
