Introduction to the Lion Monument:  The Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal) is a relief carved on the rock wall, depicting a sad lying lion stabbed by a spear. 
 This statue was sculpted in 1821 to commemorate the Swiss soldiers who died defending French King Louis XVI. It was once praised by Mark Twain as: "The saddest and most heartbreaking statue in the world." "Sad Stone."
