Chongqing Ancient City Wall Travel Guide

Yuzhong District
The Chongqing Ancient City Wall stands as a Ming‑era Han‑style stone fortification that bears witness to the city’s long history. Its origins trace back to the fourth year of the Hongwu reign (1371), when Dai Ding, the commander of the Chongqing garrison, expanded the earlier Song‑Dynasty settlement into a stone city with seventeen gates—nine open and eight closed. These remnants represent one of the four major phases of Chongqing’s urban development. Today, while preserving the original walls and gates, the site has been woven into the modern urban fabric, offering locals a pleasant spot for leisure and visitors a tangible glimpse into Chongqing’s past.
